In Life and Death
How do you tell a story using digital media? That is what the module Digital Storytelling wanted to teach me. I was given the task of planning, presenting and creating a digital story available on any platform of my choosing. Due to a love for video games and their creation, I decided that I wanted to use it as a way to tell an interactive story. This was my first time attempting something on this scale, meaning many improvements would need to be made before launching the project. However, I am highly proud of this work and the three weeks it took to develop, and I plan to continue using the skills learned over this period in the future.
I have linked the project below:
Storyboard & Pre-Production Sheet
Before I could begin creating my digital story, I had to first create my pre-production sheet to ensure my story was well thought out and was a realistic goal to achieve in three weeks. The official task was to create a storyboard and present the idea to others. However, I thought it would be better to also include my script and character designs as part of my pre-production to ensure that I had a clear vision for my story.
My storyboard, script and character designs can be seen below:
Creating the Digital Story
Exploring Unity and discovering the inner workings of game development was one of the more challenging parts of this module. However, I was determined to make this the format of my digital story. I began to learn how Unity worked as a platform along with how to use C# as a programming language for Game development.
After learning the basics, I began to create art assets for the story, however, due to the short amount of time I had to create the story it is of relatively low quality, something I aim to change in the future. After this, I imported all of these assets into the project and added behaviours to them to make the project function correctly.
Through the combination of movement, dialogue, sound and my knowledge from the module, I was able to create a short story that fit the brief of my task. Overall I highly enjoyed this task and hope to continue with this type of storytelling in the future.
